How to Diagnose Event Spam in Product Analytics

A founder-friendly way to spot noisy tracking, keep only useful events, and make future analysis easier.

The symptom: lots of data, little clarity

If your analytics dashboard feels busy but still fails to answer simple product questions, the problem is often event spam. That usually means too many low-value events, duplicate tracking, vague names, or instrumentation added without a plan for later analysis.

For founder-led teams, event spam creates a painful tradeoff: you pay the mental cost of maintaining analytics, but you still cannot confidently answer what users did, where they got stuck, or which behaviors lead to activation and retention.

What event spam usually looks like

  • The same action is tracked in multiple ways, such as click, button_click, and cta_clicked for one UI element.
  • Events fire on page load, scroll, hover, or focus even when they do not change a user’s state.
  • Names describe the implementation instead of the behavior, like modal_opened_v2 or signup_step_3_viewed.
  • You can see volume, but not intent, because key properties are missing or inconsistent.
  • Teams add events reactively, so later analysis needs joins and workarounds to reconstruct basic user journeys.

A simple diagnosis test

1. Ask whether each event changes a decision

If an event does not help you choose what to build, fix, or measure next, it is probably noise. A good event should answer at least one of these questions: did the user start, did they complete, did they succeed, or did they drop off at a meaningful step?

2. Check whether the event can be named in plain English

If you would not say the event name out loud to another founder, it is too technical or too specific. Favor behavior-based names like account_created, project_published, or invite_sent over implementation details.

3. Look for repeated meaning across screens

A single user action should usually map to one event. If the same meaning appears in three places, your taxonomy is probably too broad or too UI-driven. That makes funnels harder to trust and feature adoption harder to compare.

A lean instrumentation plan that avoids future cleanup

  • Track state changes, not every interaction. Capture events when a user begins, completes, publishes, upgrades, invites, activates, or cancels.
  • Keep one primary event per milestone. Example: signup_started, signup_completed, project_created, first_value_achieved.
  • Use properties for context, not new event types. Store plan, workspace type, source, template, or feature name as properties when they change the meaning.
  • Prefer stable nouns and verbs. Avoid version numbers unless the product flow itself changed in a breaking way.
  • Collect only the properties you expect to segment by later. If you will never filter by it, do not instrument it.
  • Write down the “why” for each event so future teammates know what question it supports.
